Taft Avenue Sewer Improvement Project

Construction crews have been hard at work on the Taft Avenue Sewer Improvement Project, progressing steadily east toward Tustin Street. This essential project will upgrade aging regional sewer infrastructure to better serve the needs of a growing population.

Current Work

Location: Taft Ave. from Glassell St. to Shaffer St.
When: O
ngoing through end of July. *
Hours:
Mon. – Fri.; 8:30 a.m.- 4 p.m.*

A temporary bypass pipeline has been successfully installed at the intersection of Shaffer St. and Taft Ave. This system is operating smoothly, ensuring uninterrupted sewer service for the surrounding community. Crews are also actively working in between the intersections to access and upsize the pipelines, which are over 15 feet deep.

Active construction work and detours at the Taft Ave. and Shaffer St. intersection are expected to be completed by the week of June 23. Traffic control will remain in place along Taft Ave. to ensure the safety of our crews and the construction area.

Impacts:

  • Detours will be in place when intersection work is being performed.
  • K-rail barriers are installed along the project route with one lane open for east and westbound traffic.
  • Crosswalks may be closed intermittently during work, please follow signs.
  • No street parking along the work area.
  • Bus stops along Taft Ave. will be impacted during construction. Visit octa.net for details.

Upcoming Work

Location: Intersection at Taft Ave. and Cambridge St.
When: Week of June 23 for approximately 4-5 weeks. *
Hours: Mon. – Fri.; 8:30 a.m.- 4 p.m.*

Starting on the week of June 23, traffic control will be installed on the Taft Ave. and Cambridge St. intersection. This phase of work will include the installation of a bypass system. Once that is in place, they will begin trenching to access and upgrade the pipeline segment between Shaffer and Cambridge. The trenching and upsizing work happening between Shaffer St. and Cambridge St. is expected to take approximately 3 months*. More details on this work will be added as it progresses.

Each intersection along the project route will require bypass system installation followed by new pipeline construction. We expect to reach the intersection of Taft Ave. and Tustin St. in Fall of 2025*. We appreciate the community’s continued patience and cooperation as we complete this important infrastructure improvement.

Impacts:

  • Detours and turn restrictions will be in place for intersection work – follow posted signs.
  • Crosswalks may be closed intermittently during work, so please follow signs.
  • No street parking along the work area.
  • At least one lane will remain open for east and westbound traffic.
  • Bus stops along Taft Ave. will be impacted during construction. Visit www.octa.net for details.
  • Increased activity, dust, and noise are expected near the construction zone.

*All dates and times are subject to change due to operational factors or inclement weather.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to improve critical regional infrastructure.

Project Description:

The Taft Avenue Sewer Improvement Project will replace and relocate a portion of the Taft Sewer in the City of Orange.

This project will upsize almost two miles of pipe along Taft Avenue from Glassell Street to Sacramento Street, northbound on Sacramento Street to Brentford Avenue, to Breckenridge Street to Meats Avenue. The current pipe ranges between 12 to 15 inches and will be upsized to 18 to 21 inches.

A portion of the sewer that currently runs along Tustin Street will be relocated to North Sacramento Street where there is more room to install a larger pipe and facilitates the future maintenance of the pipeline.
